What to expect from the PHS

People often ask us, "What happened to such-and-such an oil company? Are they still around? Are the share certificates I've found worth anything?" Below are companies we have already researched for people.

We cannot promise to answer questions you send us and we do not provide valuations. The Petroleum History Society is a volunteer-run organization with few resources. However we are keenly interested in Canadian petroleum history and will reply to your questions where we can. Please note:

  • Our research resources primarily relate to old oil and gas companies in Alberta and, to a lesser extent, Canada. We cannot research modern companies nor companies outside of Canada.
  • It may take us a long time before we can get back to you.
  • We do not promise to reply.

Our research is primarily conducted by the Glenbow Archives, under the direction of the Glenbow's Chief Archivist - Doug Cass - who is also one of our Directors. PHS President, Clint Tippett, and other members may also add their knowledge.

Share certificates of defunct companies

Even if a company no longer exists, the actual share certificates may be of value to collectors. To check that out search for "scripophily" at your favorite search engine. The Petroleum History Society would gratefully accept certificates as a donation if you so desire - Canadian companies only.

How to research old companies yourself

Here are some good references for old oil companies in Alberta and Canada. You may need to find these in an archives where out-of-date copies are kept, rather than just the latest edition.

  • Financial Post Survey of Oils
  • Financial Post survey of predecessor and defunct companies
  • Incorporated companies in Alberta

For more modern companies and companies in other jurisdictions please check with local archives, libraries, museums, or corporate registries. For relatively modern companies - check with stock brokers or other investment professionals.

Here are three commercial services which research old stock. Please note, we have no experience with these services and this is not an endorsement of them.

Here's a CBC news story entitled Researching old stock and bond certificates:
   http://www.cbc.ca/money/story/2008/05/15/f-lostmoney-stockcertificates.html

What to do if you find an existing successor company

If your research leads you to an existing company that took over the old company, contact their transfer agent. You can probably find the transfer agent by going to the Investor Relations section of the existing company's website. If you can't find the transfer agent, contact the Investor Relations department of the existing company.

Old companies we have researched

Note - "struck off" or "struck from the corporate register" means the company went out of business, rather than being merged with another firm.

Commonwealth Drilling Company - 1939-1978

The person who inquired had found a Commonwealth Drilling Company credit card and wondered how old it was.

According to the Financial Post, Commonwealth Drilling was established in 1939 and merged with other companies around 1978. Many of the names of the other firms mentioned disappeared through mergers in the early 1960s.

This credit card was probably issued to a Commonwealth employee. A drilling company's business would take an employee all over rural areas, so the card had to be valid for a variety of companies - there were no widely accepted cards, like VISA or MasterCard, in those days. This card was good for Anglo-American Exploration, British American Oil, White Rose, Imperial, McColl-Frontenac Oil, Pacific Petroleums, Royalite Oil, and Shell Oil Co., with a separate credit card account number for each company.

The McColl-Frontenac account indicates that the card is from 1939-1941. The McColl-Frontenac name was in use until 1941 when it was replaced by the Texaco name. See McColl Bros. Ltd. below.

McColl-Anderson Oil Company
McColl Bros. Ltd.
McColl-Frontenac Oil Company - 1873 to 1959
- forerunner of Texaco Canada

(This is an excerpt from "Canada's Early Oil Industry - A Brief History" by Brenda Curtis, originally published in The Petro-Philatelist. It was reproduced with permission of the author in the Petroleum History Society's newsletter Archives in June 2000.)

McColl-Anderson Oil Company was formed in 1873 in Toronto, Ontario, and consisted of a refinery and a lubricating oil and grease facility. Sometime before 1897 the name was shortened to McColl Bros. In 1927 it merged with Frontenac Oil Refineries to become McColl-Frontenac Oil Company. By then it had operations coast-to-coast. Around this time the Texas Corporation began to buy shares in McColl-Frontenac and within a few years gained controlling interest in the company. It further strengthened its interests by having McColl-Frontenac buy the Texas Company of Canada which had operations in Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia.

The McColl-Frontenac name and its Red Indian products were in use until 1941 when they were replaced by the Texaco name and its Sky Chief products.

The McColl-Frontenac named was changed to Texaco in 1959. Texaco was acquired by Imperial Oil in 1989.

Mount Stephen Oil and Gas Company - 1914-1924

The Mount Stephen Company was one of the firms established in the first major oil boom in Alberta in 1914. It was incorporated in 1914 and dissolved in 1924.

Quoting from PHS Director Doug Cass's thesis (Investment in Alberta Petroleum 1914-1930, University of Calgary, 1985, p. 53-54):

“The Mount Stephen Oil Company was organized by George Cloakey and T. G. Weston. They drilled a well in the Monarch field west of Olds, Alberta that by 1916 cost of $100,000. A second well was put down in Turner Valley but was suspended in 1919. After this, Mount Stephen attempted to negotiate a sale of their holdings, which was eventually accomplished with the disposal of the assets to the McLeod Oil company in return for shares. Cloakey then went on to establish the Seneca Oil Company.”

A few notes on George Cloakey: Mr. And Mrs. Cloakey first came to the Westerdale District in 1890, homesteading on SW 1/4 of Sec.36-32-3-W5M (Alberta). Having developed his homestead they moved to Olds where he became a real estate agent and a landman for the CPR. Later they moved to Calgary and he was active in oil field developments in the Turner Valley area.

Queen City Oil Company - 1877 - 1912

Queen City Oil was established by Samuel Rogers in 1877, later acquired by Rockefeller’s Standard Oil Trust, and acquired by Imperial Oil in 1899 when Standard acquired control of Imperial. The company name was changed from Queen City Oil Works to Queen City Oil Company in 1882. It was Ontario's largest petroleum wholesaler. (Rogers' brother, Elias, had his own company, called Elias Rogers and Sons, that was purchased by McColl Brothers.)

Quoting from Mulvany, Charles Pelham and Graham Adam Mercer, “The History of Toronto and County of York” Toronto, 1885:

"Queen City Oil Company, 30 Front Street East, was established in Toronto by Samuel Rogers & Co., in January, 1877, under the name of the Queen City Oil Works, which was changed to its present style in 1882, with Samuel Rogers as manager. The works were on the Esplanade till 1882, when they were removed to their present location. The manufactory is situated on Sherbourne Street, and is a brick structure 66 x 119 feet, with a wing 60 x 22. There are two brick warehouses on Princess Street, being respectively 60 X 22 feet and 40 x 80 feet, the latter having a wing 25 x 80 feet. There are also offices and cooper shops. Eighteen men are employed at the works; nine in the office, and twelve on the road in Ontario. At Montreal there is a branch warehouse, where a large quantity of oil is sold annually. The business has increased from time to time until at present it reaches fully half a million of dollars a year. All kinds of lubricating and refined oils are manufactured, and sold in every part of the Dominion. The company owns six tank cars, which are constantly kept busy on the road. In 1883 they received gold medals at Toronto, Guelph and London."

Tawadina Syndicate & Ram River Oils Limited

1952 documents indicate Ram River Oils entered into agreement with Richland Oil Development Co. of Canada )

(PHS President, Clint Tippett, researched this company.)

"I couldn't find any reference to this Tawadina Syndicate in any of the corporate level references I have.  Consequently I believe that it was a privately held company or arrangement. ...

"Richland Oil Development of Canada Limited  was incorporated in Alberta in 1951.  It changed its name to Richland Oil and Gas Ltd. in 1955.  The latter is also listed as having been incorporated in Alberta in 1951 and it was merged into Toloda Drilling Ltd. in 1971.  I could find no further trace of this last company."

Ram River Oils was struck from the Alberta register in 1963. There is a good little history of Ram River in the June 1982 issue of Roughneck magazine.
